Silicone Antifoam Compounds

TRANS-100

Like the other food-grade TRANS antifoams, TRANS-100 is based on polydimethylsiloxane; however, unlike the other TRANS antifoams, TRANS-100 is not a water-based emulsion: it's a 100% active, water-free, thick dispersion of silicon dioxide within a body of silicone fluid. The TRANS-100 series of antifoams are designed to control foam in many types of primarily non-aqueous systems, although some utility can be found in certain aqueous applications. Widely used in many non-food-grade industrial applications, TRANS-100 also finds utility beyond, and is not limited to, the food industry.

To control foam, TRANS-100 may be added directly to the foaming product or process, or it may be first dispersed in various predominantly hydrophobic solvents prior to application. It is readily dispersed in aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and when agitated well may also be dispersed in aliphatic hydrocarbons. Trans-100 is used in detergents, petroleum refining, cutting oils, insect repellent, fermentations, rendering, and chemical and food processing. Solvent dispersions of TRANS-100 are the preferred method of application, and the dispersions should be used immediately.

It is advisable to maintain agitation in the dispersion until the moment of application, or to at least ensure that the dispersion is thoroughly stirred immediately prior to application. Do not attempt to dilute TRANS-100 products with water. Each foaming problem is unique and requires different treatment levels of TRANS-100. Use only the minimum amount of antifoam required to control the foam. This same principle also applies when optimizing the concentration and usage level of a solvent dispersion of TRANS-100.

Food-grade applications are limited to a federally defined legal maximum of silicone content (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, part 173.340). This translates into a maximum of 10 parts per million (10 mg/L) of TRANS-100. Non-food-grade applications are not restricted in this capacity and may use greater concentrations of antifoam in their process. Trial testing will be necessary to optimize the amount of TRANS-100 used in a given non-food-grade process.

As with any antifoam or defoamer, thorough testing should always be conducted to determine the suitability and compatibility of the antifoam with the foaming system and processing equipment.

TRANS-296

TRANS-296 is a 100% active, non-aqueous, glycol-based, industrial-grade antifoam utilizing high concentrations of organo-modified silicones in conjunction with non-silicone defoaming polymers to deliver outstanding foam-combative performance. Originally designed for high-performance coatings applications, TRANS-296 also possesses good stability and long-lasting efficacy in a variety of other industrial processes, including agricultural applications, and in the manufacture of paper and paperboard.
